Sage Shurman (b. 2005) is a composer, orchestrator, and multimedia artist from Los Angeles. She is interested in art as a sensory experience and is known to create driving emotional narratives. Amongst other awards, Sage is an ASCAP Morton Gould winner, a John Green Prize winner, and a YoungArts winner. She has been commissioned by groups including Hub New Music, the Taos Chamber Music Group, the Cincinnati May Festival, and ChamberQUEER. Additionally, her works have been performed by ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic String Orchestra, members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Southeast Symphony, Sandbox Percussion, the Thalea Quartet, the Parker Quartet, Ensemble 4 These Times, members of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), NKCC, Triple Helix, and Recap Percussion Quartet.
Sage studied privately with Ian Krouse at UCLA as well as Andrew Norman, Sarah Gibson, and Thomas Kotcheff at the LA Phil Composer Fellowship program. Additionally, Sage studied with Gity Razaz as a part of the Luna Composition Lab Fellowship, and continues to receive guidance from founders Ellen Reid and Missy Mazzoli. Sage also has experience film scoring and worked with film score composer, Kurt Farquhar. Most recently, she was mentored by Jimmy Lopez as a composer fellow in the 2024 Lakes Area Music Festival.
Sage is currently at Harvard studying neuroscience and music. In her time at university, she has furthered her interest in multimedia work. As a 2024 Conflux Fellow, she exhibited a dance performance space with motion triggered audio. Additionally, she has been on the executive team of two original musicals, The Kids Are Alright and Spurned, as the orchestrator and music director.
